What is NAT (Network Address Translation)?

Topic 18: What is NAT (Network Address Translation)?

📘 Simple Explanation with Real-Life Examples

🔸 What is NAT?

  • NAT stands for Network Address Translation.

  • It allows many devices in a local network (like your home Wi-Fi) to share one public IP address on the internet.

🔹 Real-Life Example:

  • Imagine a family sharing one phone number for all their calls.

  • NAT lets all devices in your home share one public IP address to communicate with the internet.

🔸 How NAT Works:

  • Your router changes the private IP addresses of your devices to its public IP address when sending data out.

  • When data comes back, NAT sends it to the correct device inside the network.

🔹 Why NAT is Important:

  • It saves the limited number of public IP addresses.

  • It helps protect devices by hiding their private IPs from the internet.

🔹 Try It Yourself:

  • Your home router uses NAT.

  • Devices in your home have private IPs (like 192.168.x.x), but your router has a public IP.
